October 4:

Father of Lights

James 1:12-18

James 3:13-4:10

Wisdom. Greek, sophia, broad and full of intelligence; used of the knowledge of very diverse matters. Wisdom may be defined as the proper application of knowledge and experience to make sound judgments, discern truth, and improve well-being.

Two characteristics of wisdom are discernment, the ability to see beneath the surface, distinguish right from wrong, and navigate complex or uncertain situations. The second characteristic of wisdom is long-term perspective, focusing on future contentment and the common good, rather than immediate gratification.

These modern definitions of wisdom describe the wisdom that James says comes from the Father of lights. James declares that God tempts no one, rather, we are tempted by our own greed and selfishness. Stop and reflect on these words: Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (1:17 italics added)

God is the giver of life and hope. It is never God’s desire that we be estranged from God’s presence. We choose immediate gratification over the long-term perspective of being in relationship with God. Rather than discerning what is good, right, and just we choose selfishness, greed, and “me” first. Our discernment goes only as far as our personal desires.

James says we are adulterers when choose ourselves over faithfulness to God and God’s precepts. He goes as far as to say that we are murderers. Strong words! Metaphors for choosing ourselves over God. Frightening descriptions of how God views the quarrels and conflicts that take place in our homes, communities, and even in our churches.

This section ends on a high note. A note of hope, forgiveness, and possibility.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. – Amen
