There is a poignancy in the characters of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Joseph is identified as a “secret disciple” and Nicodemus is remembered for his nocturnal visit to Jesus.

Light and darkness are strong metaphors in John’s gospel. The fact that Nicodemus came to Jesus at night is indicative of his fear of losing face with other Pharisees if he was seen talking to Jesus in the bold light of day. Jesus is identified in John as the light of the world (John 1:5; 8:12). Although Nicodemus came in darkness, he met the source of light and eventually acknowledged discipleship by joining Joseph in the preparation and burial of Jesus’ body.

Mark’s gospel notes that Joseph was a respected member of the Sanhedrin (Mark 15:43). As such Joseph was fearful of losing his reputation in the Council.

Both Joseph and Nicodemus finally stepped into the spotlight of center stage and asked Pilate for Jesus’ body so that it might receive a proper burial. It took courage to take that step. We have no record of what happened to them after this bold move. One may guess that they lost their positions of prestige. What they gained, however, is the light of eternal life, which can never be extinguished.

Reflection: Holy Saturday provides a great opportunity for personal reflection and spiritual growth. In the quiet of Holy Saturday, I am called to reflect upon the times I have been afraid to acknowledge my commitment to Jesus. “What will they say or think of me, if I admit I’m a Christian?” “Perhaps, I should remain in the shadows.”

Repentance: That actions of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus may be seen as acts of repentance. Repentance is more than feeling sorry or guilty. Repentance is changing direction. Both Nicodemus and Joseph took a bold step in proclaiming their fealty to Jesus by asking for his body and preparing it for burial.

Reconciliation: If I am to experience forgiveness and reconciliation with God, I need to step out of the shadows and live into the light of Jesus’ love.

Renewal: “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

There is where I want to be . . .walking into the light. Hopeful. Bold. Loving. Forgiven and forgiving. Take a moment on this Holy Saturday to meditate on the direction you are taking in life. There are only two choices. Darkness or Light.
