It’s about 10:30 pm on New Year’s Eve and it is a time for reflection and looking forward. In terms of reflection, we tried a new adventure in moving to a different state and working in a different ministry. It wasn’t an experience that I choose to repeat, but it was a valuable time in our lives. We were reminded that God does not always call us to be comfortable or even successful, as secular society defines success. God calls us rather to be faithful. In that brief wilderness, God blessed us with some incredible people who have become beloved friends.
On this night it is time to look forward. Some people make resolutions. Lose weight. Quit smoking. Pray more. Attend church on a regular basis. Whatever. I do not make resolutions.
Rather than examining what is wrong with my life that I need to improve, I will choose on this New Year’s Eve to focus on living into God’s design for my life in the new year. Soon we will begin a new ministry. I don’t know what that ministry will lead to for the church or for me as pastor. What I know is the One who called me into ministry leads me in new and important ways to support and shepherd the persons entrusted to my care. That is the call. That is the challenge.
The ball just dropped in Times’ Square signaling in it’s iconic fashion the beginning of a new year. What will I do with the time and opportunities given me in the next twelve months? How about you? Resolutions? Reclamation? New Life?
Do not remember the former things or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:18-19 emphasis added)
Here is a suggestion for 2025. Do not look back at failure and disappointment. Look forward with excitement and anticipation to the new things that God is doing in your life and in your ministry.
Peace be with you all.
