John 1:1-9; 12:35-36
John’s Gospel begins with an introduction of Jesus as the light that brings life into the world.
John writes that darkness cannot overcome the light. The role of John is to bear witness to the light that is to come. John is clear to state that he is not the light but that “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” (John 1:9)
In John 8:12 Jesus declares himself to be the light of the world. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” As Jesus draws near the end of his earthly ministry, he warns his audience that he will be with them only a little longer. He challenges them to believe in the light so that they may become children of light.
In John 12:21 some Greeks approach Philip with the request, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” I find myself this Holy Week with the same wish. I would like to see Jesus. I would like to see Jesus in the actions of those who proclaim to love and worship him, yet practice hate and prejudice against those who do not look or act as we decide they should. I would like to see the light of life overcome the hostile actions of those who brutalize their sisters and brothers based on outward appearance or political affiliation, or country of origin.
I would like to acknowledge Jesus on the throne of our lives rather than the blasphemy of elevating a human being to divine status. When God declared, “You shall have no other gods before me.” Guess what? He meant it! (Exodus 20:3; Deuteronomy 5:7 emphasis added) For God’s sake ignore the false prophets who proclaim the deity of any human being. No human being is the messiah or savior. Jesus the Christ is the Messiah the Savior of the world. Anyone who brings a different message is a liar.
This Holy Week I would like to see Jesus in the actions of those who brazenly call his name but walk in darkness. Hatred is always wrong. Hatred separates us from God and plunges us into the eternal darkness of separation from the light. Hatred is demonic. It is unjust and ungodly.
For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light—(Ephesians 5:8, emphasis added)

Can you show me Jesus?
