And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
The reporter ask the potential voter about his candidate of choice to which the man replied, “ He is a gift from God. An answer to prayer.”
What a disastrous and disgraceful answer. To attribute to a human being the qualities that belong to God’s Son alone is the ultimate hubris.
John’s Gospel assures us that the very character of God came to humanity in the person of Jesus the Christ. John writes that “from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace” (1:16). It is lunacy to put our trust in a flawed human being.
There is a frightening tendency in our nation to place blind faith in a political leader. Any political leader worthy of our support needs to be measured by the standards epitomized in the life and actions of Jesus the Christ. I don’t care which side of the aisle you sit on. The person to whom we pledge our support must be representative of the values we see in the Christ.
There is a call among some religious leaders to force a skewed representation of Christianity, inform legislative action, and subsequent laws which marginalize our sisters and brothers, all created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Christ-followers are those who live into the reality of the Incarnation.
Christ-followers always put the needs of others above their own. Christ-followers commit to being peacemakers. Christ-followers understand the power of forgiveness over retribution. Christ-followers commit to practice the attributes of the one we claim to serve.
To place one’s faith in a human being is not only ludicrous but is sinful. We can serve only one master.
“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40; Mark 12:30-31; Luke 10:27)
In these words, is the model for how we are to live our lives and practice our faith. Anyone who tells you differently seeks to draw you away from the bedrock foundation of our faith.
