WORDS MATTER

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. (James 3:5-6)

It was a thoughtless response, intended to be made in jest. There was a good deal of laughter and barbs being bandied about.   I responded to what I assumed to be a good-natured joke with a comment that I later learned was perceived as sexist.

I can argue that my intention was not to be sexist, but to participate in the overall humorous tenor of the room. I was wrong! My words caused harm. They were thoughtless, and although intended to be a joke where not perceived as funny by everyone present.

It is a necessary reminder that words matter. The person receiving the words cannot always understand the intent, and thus, the words cause unnecessary pain and frustration.

The lesson learned is to think carefully before the quick retort comes streaming from our lips Words matter. They can build up or tear down. They can give peace or cause pain. I’m sorry for words thoughtlessly uttered. Unfortunately, they cannot be retracted.

Words matter. Think about it, before you say it.
